Pre-Surgery Anxiety – 7 Tips to Help You Cope

Many patients have found these tips helpful for calming their pre-surgery anxiety and nervousness. Let us know in the comments if you have anything to add!

  1. Focus on Success
Look for positive experiences from people who have had your type of surgery. Reading others’ success stories in patient forums or social media groups can help you stay focused on good outcomes.
  2. Trust Your Medical Team
Remind yourself that your surgeon and their team perform these procedures regularly. They know what they’re doing, and trusting their expertise can help you feel more at ease.
  3. Keep Your Mind Busy
Distract yourself with activities that bring you joy—watch a favorite show or comedy, play games, listen to music, spend time with loved ones, listen to music you love, get some fresh air, or work on a hobby or home project to keep negative thoughts at bay.
  4. Practice Deep Breathing & Meditation
Try deep breathing exercises when you feel anxious (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4). You can also explore guided relaxation meditations on YouTube or apps like Calm or Insight Timer.
  5. Remind Yourself Why You’re Doing This
Focus on the benefits of your surgery. This might be things like less pain, better mobility, improved health, or a longer life.
  6. Talk to Someone Who Understands
Seek support from an online group, talk to someone who has had the same procedure, or lean on friends and family for support. If it’s an option for you, speaking with a professional counsellor can also be helpful.
  7. Inform Yourself (But Set Limits)
Knowing what to expect can reduce fear, but too much research can also increase anxiety. Stick to reliable sources like legitimate websites rather than reading too many online horror stories. Talk to your surgeon about any concerns, fears, or worries.
